Part 5: A Song of Ice and Fire starter set.
In this part of “Winter is coming” we take a look at the starter set for A Song of Ice and Fire. The contents and browse over a few of the unit cards.
King Robert Baratheon is dead, and those in control of the Great Houses of Westeros have decided it’s time that they had a representative on the Iron Throne. The crows have been sent out. The bannermen have responded. The War of Five Kings is on!A Song of Ice & Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game Starter Set – Stark vs. Lannister has everything needed for two players to fight epic battles. Containing forces for both House Stark and House Lannister, you build your armies, select leaders, construct their Tactics Deck, and engage in one of five different Game Modes.
Inside the box you will find:
The miniatures come pre assembled and ready to play straight out of the box. The two forces come moulded in two colours so its easy to tell them apart. Grey for the Starks and red for the Lannisters. The miniatures are highly detailed, i was very surprised at just how good they were for pre built one piece miniatures.
The rule book is written well and very clear, its one of those games with a small and easy to learn rule set which takes time to master.
Everything is laid out clearly with plenty of picture diagrams and examples of rules.
The unit cards are nice and compact and easy to read, will all the stats that you need to use those units on the table top.
The stats are broken down into: speed, attack, morale, defence and abilities.
The card also shows any house alliance and unit names.
Stark Sworn Swords and Lannister Guardsman are the back bone of the two armies in the starter set.
The two units are a very even match, with both units hitting on a 4+. The Starks have more attacks and slightly better morale but the Lannisters have the better armour,
House Umber Berserkers are a beast of a combat unit. They hit on a 4+ with 7/8/9 attacks….Yes they get more attacks as they are killed.
The Mountains Men are great shock troops for the Lannister forces, with a movement of 5, a 4+ armour save and 7,5,4 attacks that hit on a 4+, £+ if they have more ranks than the enemy. Wit critical blow on top of that the Mountains Men chew through opposing units.
” critical roll grants you an extra hit for every roll of a 6 to hit”.
I cant wait to get the starter set painted and on the table.
Coming soon……..Part 6: House Lannister.
